Passenger cars

ShoreLink in Piteå will now become a transshipment center for passenger cars to Norr- and Västerbotten. The passenger cars arrive by both ship and rail to Haraholmen for collection and transshipment to trucks for onward transport to points of sale.

Volkswagen Group Sverige AB together with Scandinavian Motortransport is today launching a new logistics solution where regular shipping line traffic with Smurfit Kappa and shipping company Wagenborg is used in the northbound direction. Cars also come by rail from Halmstad or Malmö. The new logistics flow includes between 5500-6000 cars on an annual basis, of which nearly 3000 are via boat.

Volkswagen Group AB together with the transport supplier have had difficulties in delivering vehicles to northern Sweden with satisfactory stability and reliability in lead times over the years. The biggest source of disruptions has been weather influences, train transport with many cars on the same train, few departures and long distances on a poorly maintained train network. “We have carried out a pilot project for a period of time to evaluate alternatives to train transport to shorten lead times and achieve higher delivery precision of vehicles to northern Sweden. The pilot has been very successful and appreciated and we see great potential for the entire chain of dealers, terminal managers and transporters,” says Daniel Wennerqvist, Head of Trading & Billogistik, Volkswagen Group Sverige AB.

Christer Bentzlin, transport manager at the transport and logistics company ShoreLink, which is responsible for the operational activities in Piteå Port, says: “This means that in principle all cars that are ordered today and in the future or that have not yet been produced will follow the new logistics flow”. Sture Öberg, logistics manager at Smurfit Kappa, states: “With a historical delivery accuracy of almost 100%, the cars will be delivered to Piteå every Tuesday afternoon to be unloaded and transported by truck to the receiving dealer”.

Press conference with reception of the first cars will take place at ShoreLink's head office at Haraholmen in Piteå on Monday, April 15th at 4:1300 p.m. For more information, contact Christer Bentzlin at ShoreLink. Mobile 070-628 26 24
