ShoreLink's entire operations, which are conducted in four locations, include just over a hundred vehicles. In a year, ShoreLink consumes almost one million liters of fuel, of which the terminal at Haraholmen's logistics center in Piteå accounts for almost half of the consumption. Now ShoreLink is taking a big step and is gradually replacing the fuel throughout the group with fossil-free fuel (HVO), with the terminal in Piteå being the first to make the switch.
It is part of a long-term investment, the last major step being taken five years ago, when two electric cranes were purchased. The cranes have saved around 600 liters of fuel since then.
- In every investment we make, we focus on environmental aspects and therefore invest in vehicles with the highest environmental classification, says Lars Johansson, site manager for ShoreLink Terminal in Piteå.
Every little helps…
In addition to the major improvements, there are a number of smaller changes that contribute to a better environment. For example, ShoreLink has extended the tractors used when loading kraftliners, to be able to handle larger loads and thus fewer truck turns. This saves approximately 2 liters of fuel each year. It may seem like a small saving, but together with more improvements where you lift or drive more per turn, it becomes a big environmental gain.
"Even though we are now switching to fossil-free fuel, thereby reducing emissions, the goal is still always to consume as little fuel as possible," says Lars Johansson. And then every small improvement counts.
In many everyday situations, improvements have been made, where ShoreLink now takes more cargo per load or drives shorter distances. This requires less fuel, reduces wear on the machines and makes unloading and loading more efficient.
- We are constantly thinking about how we can become more efficient in our work and this goes hand in hand with reducing environmental impact, concludes Lars Johansson.
