Today, ShoreLink's new electric crane was inaugurated at Kalix Port. It replaces a diesel-powered crane, which consumed just over 60 liters of diesel per year.
"Replacing the old diesel crane with an electric crane was a no-brainer. It's part of our environmental work to contribute to a better environment," says Susanne Jangdal, CEO of ShoreLink.
ShoreLink performs all loading and unloading of goods in Kalix Port, with cranes and machinery that ShoreLink owns and has its own staff. In recent years, the amount of cargo has gradually increased and the ships have become larger. This year alone, ShoreLink expects to handle approximately 400 tons of cargo, which primarily consists of pulpwood, wood chips and paper pulp. The paper pulp is shipped primarily to Spain and England and is used for sack paper. The pulpwood comes from Latvia and Finland.
- For BillerudKorsnäs, sustainability is always in focus, and it is even more important now that volumes are increasing, says Mikael Nordqvist, factory manager at BillerudKorsnäs in Karlsborg.
- The environmental benefits of the new crane are very large, which also has a positive impact on the climate footprint of our products.
To get the new electric crane into operation, a new high-voltage cable has been laid from the Billerudkorsnäs paper mill to the quay owned by Kalix Industrial Hotel AB (KIAB).
-We are extremely positive about the collaboration between BillerudKorsnäs, ShoreLink and Kalix Industrihotell AB to achieve fossil-free loading and unloading in Kalix port, says Christer Wallin, CEO KIAB. The new electric crane has been long-awaited and now means that we can now boast of being at the forefront of environmental work while increasing capacity in the port.
Back in the 80s, ShoreLink was loading about 120 tons per hour, which was considered very good when the usual mobile cranes loaded 80 tons. Now we load well over 300 tons per hour.
"The development is moving forward and we are driving it. Thanks to good cooperation with KIAB and BillerudKorsnäs, there will be a good result," concludes Susanne.
