ShoreLink electrifies the harbors along the northern Norrland coast

Electric Cranes Loading Sawn Timber

To conduct daily operations in the ports along the northern coast of Norrland, a solid fleet of machinery is required, which includes cranes, wheel loaders, and larger and smaller forklifts. For ShoreLink, which conducts daily operations in the ports of Kalix, Luleå, Piteå and Skellefteå, the biggest climate impact is carbon dioxide emissions.

-We want to increase the pace of the green transition and are determined that our operations will be fossil-free by 2030, says ShoreLink CEO Peter Mörtlund.

ShoreLink has long worked to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, including by using HVO, environmentally classified vehicles and hybrid cranes, which can run on both electricity and diesel.

"Nothing short of zero carbon emissions is acceptable in the long term, which is why we are investing heavily," says Peter. In Piteå, we have prepared an infrastructure to be able to charge a fully electrified fleet of machines, while we have also invested in another hybrid crane, which will be delivered next year."

The new crane has a greater reach and can load/unload larger ships, but also perform significantly heavier lifts than today's existing hybrid cranes. The environmental benefit is significant, as an equivalent machine powered by diesel consumes approximately 40 liters of diesel per hour. Currently, existing hybrid cranes are powered by electricity for at least 95% of the time and diesel is only used in exceptional cases. In addition, preparations are underway for further purchases of electric machines next year.

-The initiative applies to all of our locations, where we are also investigating the possibility of installing solar cells.
