Digitized flow revolutionizes the handling of wood products and reduces climate impact

Press release 240314

ShoreLink has taken a major step forward by implementing a digitalized system for handling sawn timber. The new technology has already led to a number of positive effects, such as improved customer service, increased quality in handling and reduced environmental impact. With the transition from paper, pen and manual processes, we have modernized our operations and taken a major step into the future.

  • We have seen a big difference in the quality of handling and are happy to be able to improve the service to our customers, says CEO Peter Mörtlund.

Today, packages are scanned when they leave the sawmill and also when they arrive at the port. This tells the truck driver exactly where the package should be stored while waiting for the ship. Finally, the package is scanned again when it is picked up from the warehouse and then on the quay before being lifted aboard. The control of the packages throughout the entire flow is meticulous.

  • The difference is enormous, says Rasmus Edström, logistician and responsible for the on-site implementation in SkellefteåWhen we were up and running the first year, we had precise control over all packages. Not a single one had been missed in the handling, which was easy to happen when we worked manually.
  • The work environment has become much better for the logistics people, says Amanda Uvén, Logistics Manager Piteå. It increases safety because you don't have to be outside and climb ladders to identify the packages. It also increases efficiency because we have full control online.
  • Here in Piteå, where we have been running the system for a shorter time than in Skellefteå, we quickly noticed that we could help customers more with their matters, says Anders Eriksson, project manager Piteå who was responsible for the implementation in Piteå.

In addition to the operational benefits, the digitalized system also has a positive impact on the environment. Through better planning and control of timber packages, the mileage and number of lifts have been reduced, resulting in less wear on machines and a reduced climate impact.

We have been driving with HVO for a few years now and have reduced emissions through it, and the more we can shorten the mileage, the less impact on the environment as a whole.

The development has taken place in close collaboration with Datapolarna and the SI – pal system, which is the same system that many sawmills use for their inventory management.
