A new era for the ports in northern Sweden: "Development is happening at a fast pace"

ShoreLink is northern Sweden's largest port operator and acts as the important link between sea and land. With the increasing demand for sea transport, especially as companies in the region expand, the pressure on the ports is also growing.

"It is an exciting development and a great honor to contribute to a sustainable maritime city for future generations," says Peter Mörtlund, CEO of ShoreLink.

Every year, thousands of ships pass through the ports of Luleå, Kalix, Piteå and Skellefteå, where ShoreLink operates year-round, regardless of the weather. The ports fulfill different functions and handle specific goods – from coal transport in Luleå to timber handling in Skellefteå. The ships serve both Scandinavia and other European countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.

"We handle everything from loading and unloading to storage of goods and also offer ship clearance and contracting services. Development is fast, and Norrbotten has really become a central point on the map," says Peter. “Our customers are increasingly demanding customized solutions, and we work hard to meet their needs. All our ports are feeling the increased interest, which is gratifying.”

A modern and inclusive workplace, built on consideration and innovative thinking

ShoreLink also wants to challenge old beliefs that port work is heavy and physically demanding. The industry has changed a lot in recent decades, with the modernization and electrification of work processes.

"The port is a workplace for everyone - as long as you enjoy working outdoors and in all weathers," says Peter with a smile.

ShoreLink strives to create a safe, open and inclusive work environment where every employee feels seen and valued

"That we care about each other can be seen in everything from the work environment to safety. If someone forgets a helmet or warning clothing, we remind each other in a thoughtful way," says Peter. "The goal is for everyone to go home in the same condition, or better, after the working day."

A positive and safe working environment is promoted with good dialogue with union partners and safety representatives and encouragement to propose improvements. Which ShoreLink sees as critical to joint success.

Challenges and future visions for ShoreLink

ShoreLink is currently facing a time of rapid growth and change, where the green change and expansion in Norrbotten means both great opportunities and challenges.

"The increasing demand for sea transport as a sustainable alternative is pleasing," says Peter. "But it requires us to continuously develop our capacity and our services, while ensuring a safe working environment."

ShoreLink sees the next five to ten years as a period of great potential.

"We aim to become Sweden's most efficient and sustainable port operator," continues Peter. By strengthening efforts within environment, quality and safety, we believe that we can create even greater success and at the same time contribute to sustainable growth in the region.

Expansion plans and new services

To meet the growing needs of both established and new customers in the region, ShoreLink is constantly developing new services and overhauling its organization.

"Our ambition is to stay one step ahead and plan based on the future needs of the customers and the region." Peter concludes.

With a strategy for expansion and innovation, ShoreLink continues its journey towards becoming a driving force for sustainable and efficient logistics in northern Sweden.
